Hello! Happy Friday. It’s hot outside.
I’ve been listening to this song from Dasha on repeat. I’m hooked! It comes from the same entertaining vein as ‘Toxic’ (2003) by Britney Spears, where she is a business class air hostess, who has multiple high-octane interactions with her class. Dasha, the artist who recently reached virality, also has that Taylor Swift aesthetic that is very compelling.
Since our last weekly, it’s been frankly fascinating to watch how fast the news travels. I’ve been very tapped into the news this week, so I’ll be due for a little media cleanse sometime soon. What I am watching out for right now is:
What happens at the Democratic Convention?
Key image moments from the Paris Olympics
Music that sets the tone for the rest of the year (and the election)
The best shopping advice out there
Fashion marketing campaigns that sell
Let’s get down to business!
NEWS:
'Information is inaccurate' during tech blackout
As I write this newsletter, a global tech outage impacts travel, hospitals, businesses, and media companies. The New York Subway was running without a timetable on Friday. It feels chaotic. One traveler out of Orly—Paris soberly pointed out on CNN, “It’s shocking how one company’s failure has the power to cause a global meltdown and affect life on the planet”. It’s true, how is a company the size of Microsoft not prepared for this?
On the economic front, Bloomberg reported, “Hedge Fund Managers Have A Plan: Buy The Chaos, Sell The Calm”.
That sounds like advise for more than just the stock market. But it takes thinking over.
This tech outage also poses another important question: as information is ‘missing’, don’t we have to work on our relationship with the truth? Seriously. To me, this requires as a writer and reporter to fact-check, know my sources, and to think critically.
I asked myself this week, what do I get out of fact-checked, solid reporting? Honestly. It helps me make decisions and conduct my life in a more productive fashion. Beyond the productivity note, there is also the social aspect of it. Consuming some level of news helps me work on a meaningful life. It helps me research these articles, consume better, and find a sense of balance.
I am not saying I am particularly succeeding in all aspects of life, and I know more work can be done. Getting this letter off the ground is already a big step that has value. And after all, that is what we go to a fashion show for, a lot of it is finding value, newness, and making tasteful decisions.
Loewe’s New Look
OK, you might be asking yourself, why is Daniel Craig dressed in Loewe, in the bathroom with bangs? Our collective minds have become accustomed to Daniel Craig with short hair, wearing a tux in James Bond, or playing a journalist in thriller, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Is this Loewe’s way of purifying an image?
The Fall 2024 campaign was shot by David Sims. GQ said it was his “freaky era” and they’re not wrong. The new look strips down the banker-type meets politician aesthetic of Bond, Daniel Craig, and switches it with the urban hipster. It’s a really refreshing look.
Tinted sunglasses have been trending for a while. They read “Dinner in the Mediterranean or Casino”. After all, Loewe is a Spanish heritage brand.
It has been tough for Spanish brands to establish international connections. The only other name I can think of is Balenciaga. It’s not a knock on Spain, but it’s incredible to see how J.W. Anderson has jump-started the brand.
The wide-legged Hawkins print trousers styled with a dress shirt and sneakers add to the idea of newness. Still, I am not sure where these could be worn. For drinks or to a museum, is one idea. Or an artist’s studio. Maybe skateboarding in LA? Ibiza?
They are the opposite of quiet luxury, another big trend in fashion. And kitsch!
The best look of the campaign is however the 3-button sweater. The undone belt and French tuck have been discussed as seeming a little dangerous, but they don’t fall into either the ‘loud’ or ‘quiet’ category. Dare I say: rebellious.
In the world of competing fashions, it’s key for newness to emerge. It underscores that change is in the air.
I hope you have a good weekend! I’ve been drinking hot water with lemon, and it helps keep you cool!
