Style’s Week #18: Postcard from Deauville
Tyler Mitchel shot Neiman Marcus’ Fall 2024 campaign, Wirecutter, Emily in Paris.
Hello FBS! Happy Friday! It’s the weekend.
I’m typing this letter in from Deauville, where it’s supposed to rain for another hour.
Weather: high 73F, low 65F.
Playlist: Phoenix, The Killers, The Strokes, Glass Animals.
Outfit: white tee from Uniqlo, beige swim shorts from Columbia, taupe Birkenstocks, Ray Ban wayfarers, Ralph Lauren cap, Mois Mont necktie.
Fun Facts:
Coco Chanel, the stylist from Paris, opened a hat shop in Deauville in 1913 and introduced a line of sportswear made of jersey, a material that was previously used to make men’s underwear.
Deauville has its own version of the Hollywood walk of fame. On the boardwalk you can rent changing cabins that are named after famous people.
The Deauville American Film Festival is hosting its 50th anniversary event this year. Nearly 100 films are screened. The festival is from 6-15 of September. Day passes start at 36€.
Food: smoked salmon tourte with cream cheese, beef tartar, octopus.
Dinner:
L’Étage (located on the 3rd floor of the beachfront Novotel hotel), they offer “Deauvillais-bistro” food.
Brasserie Les Petits Princes. Reasonable prices, gossiping crowds, always good food.
Shopping:
Paprika Home Goods store. I found a great small rug made of cotton and scraps of deadstock fabric. $45.
Tyler Mitchel, the 29 year old Brooklyn-based photographer, and first black photographer to shoot a September Vogue cover, was commissioned by Neiman Marcus to shoot their Fall 2024 Campaign. The retailer is celebrating 30 Years of Art & Fashion, their annual portfolio shot by some of the world’s most talented artists including Richard Avedon and Helmut Newton. The campaign pays homage to cinematic storytelling and features Ayo Edebiri wearing an Oscar de la Renta gown, who after losing her hat to a gust of wind, is drawn in by the gilded doors at Neiman’s. It’s a really good campaign.
Paris-Deauville perfume by Chanel. The fragrance is zesty and fresh with notes of basil and Sicilian orange. ($150).
Also this dresser I found at a boutique. It’s made of cherrywood and you can customize the color and finish on order. Production takes about 8 weeks and is shipped to you. (2300€). If you’re interested, I can put you in touch with the boutique.
Let’s get down to business (beach edition).
News:
Emily from Feed Me reported that Wirecutter is launching a shopping podcast.
I’m already an avid listener of The Daily podcast so I’m pretty excited about this one. I consult Wirecutter every time I need to make a purchase decision. It’s how I learned about the brand Salomon, who sells the best sock bundles.
Abercrombie and Fitch customers are shopping the jeans aisle.
The brand that gave the noughties their ripped jeans, is back with another hit pant: the wide legged trouser, that’s wider than ever. Oh, and remember Fierce?
Emily in Paris is back with season 4. (NYT)
The cringy American has been the talk of the town in Deauville, I’ve heard people reference the show at least 5 times. Mostly every time someone does something touristy. She is known as ‘the American changing Paris business’ that was on the cover of Le Monde’s ‘La Liste’.
More than 500 people attended the premiere and there was a baby pink (red) carpet.
I’m actually excited to see the show. My favorite character is Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, who plays a high-powered Parisian executive known for a canny eye for luxury. She is splendid to watch. But it’s really the friction of Leroy-Beaulieu’s old school-ness, and the constant newness of Emily that keeps us entertained.
Have a good weekend. See you next week.
